The federal Food and Drug Administration will take steps to eliminate the synthetic dyes by the end of 2026.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent presidential candidate, has proposed a plan to phase out artificial food dyes in the U.S., citing their potential health risks, particularly to children. Kennedy's initiative aims to ban seven specific dyes—Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Titanium Dioxide—over a three-year period, arguing that these chemicals, linked to hyperactivity and other behavioral issues, are unnecessary and can be replaced with natural alternatives. He emphasizes the need for the U.S. to follow the example of countries like the U.K., Canada, and the European Union, which have already implemented similar restrictions. Kennedy's campaign also highlights the influence of the food industry on regulatory agencies, suggesting that corporate interests have delayed necessary action on food safety.
