  • Big changes could be coming to what we eat. The Department of Health and Human Services is moving to ban several artificial food dyes that have long been under scrutiny.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has initiated a phase-out of artificial trans fats in the American food supply, as announced by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. This decision follows the FDA's preliminary determination that partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), the primary source of artificial trans fats, are not generally recognized as safe (GRAS). The phase-out, expected to take three years, aims to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, potentially preventing thousands of heart attacks and deaths annually. The move has been supported by health advocacy groups but opposed by the food industry, which argues that the transition will be costly and could affect product taste and availability.
