  • For the rest of 2025, Kalamazoo residents will have a designated food scrap recycling program.

The city of Kalamazoo, Michigan, has initiated a pilot program to combat food waste by allowing residents to dispose of their food scraps at the city's recycling center. Starting from April 1, 2023, participants can drop off their food waste, which will then be transformed into compost by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Services. This initiative, supported by a grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, aims to reduce the environmental impact of food waste in landfills. The program not only seeks to decrease methane emissions but also to educate the community on sustainable waste management practices. If successful, the city plans to expand the program to include curbside pickup in the future.
