  • Red No. 3
  • is found in many American foods such as cereals, beverages, snacks, and candies. But it may soon be banned nationwide by the FDA. Here's what you need to know.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering a ban on Red No. 3, a synthetic food dye linked to cancer in animal studies, following a petition from Consumer Reports and other advocacy groups. This dye, which has been used in various food products like candies and beverages, as well as in cosmetics, was initially banned from cosmetics in 1990 due to its carcinogenic properties. Despite this, it remains in use in food, although its use has significantly declined over the years. The FDA's potential ban comes after years of advocacy highlighting the health risks associated with Red No. 3, with the agency now reviewing the evidence to possibly revoke its approval for use in food.
