West Virginia is one of the nation's unhealthiest states by a number of metrics, yet it became the first state to ban artificial food dyes.

West Virginia has become the first state to ban smoking in cars when children are present, with the new law signed by Governor Jim Justice on March 8, 2023, set to take effect on July 1, 2023. The legislation, aimed at protecting children from secondhand smoke, makes it a misdemeanor to smoke or vape in a vehicle with a minor under 16 present, punishable by a fine of up to $25 without any surcharge.
