  • According to CBS News, the FDA plans to end routine food safety inspections. What does this mean for our food safety? Here's what we know.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that it will temporarily halt most routine food safety inspections due to the ongoing government shutdown, which began on December 22, 2018. This decision affects inspections of domestic food-processing facilities, although high-risk inspections and those related to infant formula will continue. The FDA will also maintain surveillance over imported foods, but routine inspections of seafood, fruits, and vegetables at ports of entry will be suspended. The shutdown has left the FDA with limited resources, prompting the agency to prioritize activities that are critical to public health.
