  • FDA leaders say they're working to eliminate six synthetic food dyes found in American food.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated a review of the seven synthetic food dyes currently approved for use in the U.S., prompted by a citizen petition from the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). The petition seeks to ban these dyes due to potential neurobehavioral effects on children, such as hyperactivity. The FDA has agreed to re-evaluate the safety of these dyes, including Red 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2, and Green 3, and will consider the latest scientific data. This review process is expected to take several years, and the FDA has committed to providing periodic updates on its progress. The decision to review comes after years of advocacy by CSPI, which has long argued that these dyes pose health risks and should be removed from the food supply.
