A study published in the journal JAMA Neurology has found a significant association between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and an increased risk of developing cognitive impairment and stroke. The research, which analyzed data from over 30,000 participants in the REGARDS study, showed that individuals with diets where ultra-processed foods made up 20% or more of their total calorie intake had a 16% higher risk of cognitive impairment and a 15% higher risk of stroke compared to those whose diets included less than 20% ultra-processed foods. Ultra-processed foods, such as packaged snacks, sugary drinks, and ready-to-eat meals, are typically high in added sugars, fats, and artificial ingredients, and the study suggests that reducing their consumption could be beneficial for brain health.
