A new study says ultra-processed foods can be detrimental to your physical health and even lead to a premature death. But in a world where food scarcity is common, dietitians still stress that access to any food, even processed, is vital.

A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine has found that consuming ultra-processed foods, such as soft drinks, snacks, and ready-to-eat meals, can significantly reduce life expectancy. The research, which analyzed the dietary habits of over 11,000 adults in the U.S., revealed that individuals with diets high in ultra-processed foods had a 10% higher risk of death from any cause compared to those who consumed less of these foods. The study also highlighted that these foods contribute to higher risks of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend reducing the intake of ultra-processed foods and focusing on a diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods.
