Ultra-Processed Foods Linked to Over 124,000 Premature Deaths in U.S.

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are driving rising rates of preventable deaths, a global study reports. For every 10% increase in ultra-processed food consumption, the risk of all-cause mortality rises by 2.7%. UPF intake has been linked to multiple adverse physical and mental health outcomes.

A comprehensive global study involving nearly 10 million participants across 45 countries has found a significant association between the consumption of ultraprocessed foods and an increased risk of premature death, as well as higher incidences of various diseases including cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Published in the British Medical Journal, the research indicates that ultraprocessed foods, which include items like packaged snacks, sugary drinks, and ready-to-eat meals, contribute to 32 different health issues. The study emphasizes the need for public health policies to reduce the intake of these foods, highlighting that even small daily increases in ultraprocessed food consumption can lead to notable health risks. The findings call for a global effort to shift dietary habits towards more natural and minimally processed foods to improve overall health outcomes.
