This Common Food Was Just Linked to Heart Disease, Parkinson's

A recent study published in the journal Nature Medicine has linked the consumption of choline and carnitine, nutrients found in red meat, energy drinks, and some dietary supplements, to an increased risk of heart disease. The study found that these nutrients can be metabolized by gut bacteria into a compound called trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), which is associated with the buildup of plaque in the arteries, leading to atherosclerosis. Researchers suggest that reducing the intake of choline and carnitine could be a new strategy for preventing heart disease, and they are also exploring the potential of targeting the gut bacteria that produce TMAO as a therapeutic approach.
