NIH, FDA to focus on processed foods, US health secretary says

U.S. health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said on Wednesday that the "central focus" of the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration will be on studying ultra-processed foods, sugars and food additives. "The central focus of NIH, is going to be looking at - and FDA - looking at ultra-processed foods, and sugars, and the 10,000 additives that are in our ," Kennedy said during a Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions hearing.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are intensifying their focus on the health impacts of processed foods, as highlighted in a recent article on Yahoo News. This initiative comes in response to growing concerns about the role of ultra-processed foods in contributing to chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. The agencies aim to better understand the effects of these foods on health and to develop strategies to mitigate their negative impacts. This effort includes funding new research, revising dietary guidelines, and potentially implementing new regulations on food labeling and marketing. The move is part of a broader push to address public health challenges associated with modern diets.
