Ultra-Processed Foods Linked to Early Signs of Parkinson's Disease

"Nutritious foods could be a good strategy for maintaining brain health."

A study published in the journal JAMA Neurology has found a significant association between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and an increased risk of developing cognitive impairment or stroke. The research, which followed over 30,000 participants with an average age of 56 for about 11 years, showed that individuals who consumed the highest amounts of ultra-processed foods had a 16% higher risk of cognitive impairment and an 8% higher risk of stroke compared to those who consumed the least. Ultra-processed foods, which include items like packaged snacks, sugary drinks, and ready-to-eat meals, are typically high in added sugars, fats, and artificial ingredients. The study suggests that reducing the intake of these foods could be a beneficial strategy for maintaining brain health and preventing cognitive decline.
