An Indonesian soldier gives a thumbs up as he crosses a rice field on a combine harvester in remote Papua, where a government food security mega-project has raised fears of mass deforestation. The defence ministry told AFP the military had the resources and "high discipline" to accelerate the food project while securing "stability and security" in the region.

Indonesia's plan to convert large swathes of forest and peatland into palm oil plantations to address rising food costs is raising concerns about its impact on global carbon emissions and climate change. The initiative, aimed at boosting domestic food supplies, could lead to significant deforestation, releasing stored carbon into the atmosphere and exacerbating global warming. Environmentalists and scientists warn that such actions could undermine international efforts to combat climate change, as Indonesia is already one of the world's top emitters of greenhouse gases due to deforestation and peatland degradation. The move comes at a time when global food prices are soaring, prompting countries to seek solutions to food security, but critics argue that the environmental cost of expanding palm oil plantations may outweigh the short-term benefits of increased food production.
