High vs low consumption of ultraprocessed foods is associated with a twofold higher risk for early signs of Parkinson's disease, new research shows.

A study presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 77th Annual Meeting suggests a link between the consumption of ultraprocessed foods and early signs of Parkinson's disease. Researchers found that individuals who consumed the highest amounts of ultraprocessed foods had a 30% higher likelihood of developing Parkinson's disease compared to those who consumed the least. Ultraprocessed foods, which include items like soft drinks, snacks, and ready-to-eat meals, were associated with increased inflammation and oxidative stress, factors that may contribute to the development of Parkinson's. The study involved over 100,000 participants from the UK Biobank and used dietary questionnaires to assess food intake, highlighting the need for further research to confirm these findings and explore the mechanisms behind this association.
