It's not just seafood anymore. Microplastics are showing up in snacks, sweets and even vegetables.
The article from Yahoo Lifestyle discusses a study revealing that microplastics, tiny plastic particles less than 5mm in size, are commonly found in one side of common table salt, specifically in unrefined sea salt. Researchers from the University of Newcastle in Australia found that out of 39 salt brands tested from 21 countries, 36 of them contained microplastics, with an average of 134 particles per kilogram of salt. The study highlights the widespread contamination of microplastics in our food chain, as sea salt is derived from seawater, which is increasingly polluted with plastic waste. The article emphasizes the need for better waste management and reduction of plastic use to mitigate this environmental and health issue.
