This gig at Chicago magazine, where I write one review a month plus some roundups, doesn't afford me quite the same depth of data points, but enough to notice some of the changes taking place in Chicago's dining world. Here are five trends I've witnessed in 2024:

The article from Chicago Magazine outlines five dining trends that dominated Chicago's culinary scene in 2023. Firstly, Instagrammable Restaurants have become increasingly popular, with eateries designed to be visually appealing for social media, featuring vibrant decor and photogenic food presentations. Secondly, Plant-Based Menus have seen a surge, with more restaurants offering vegan and vegetarian options, reflecting a broader shift towards sustainable and health-conscious eating. Thirdly, Ghost Kitchens or virtual restaurants have expanded, focusing solely on delivery without a traditional dine-in space, catering to the ongoing demand for takeout and delivery services. Fourth, Nostalgic Comfort Foods have made a comeback, with chefs reimagining classic dishes to evoke a sense of nostalgia while providing comfort. Lastly, Sustainability and Local Sourcing have become key, with restaurants emphasizing locally-sourced ingredients, reducing waste, and adopting eco-friendly practices to appeal to environmentally conscious diners. These trends highlight a blend of innovation, nostalgia, and a commitment to sustainability in Chicago's dining landscape.
