  • Chinese authorities held meetings with the country's food delivery service providers including JD.com, Meituan and Alibaba's Ele.me to discuss competition in the sector, the country's market regulator said on Tuesday. The companies were asked to abide by laws and regulations, compete fairly and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of consumers, business operators and delivery workers, the regulator's statement showed.

China's market regulators have instructed major food delivery platforms, Meituan and Ele.me, to enhance their treatment of delivery workers by ensuring fair compensation and improving their working conditions, as reported by the state-backed Workers' Daily. This directive comes in response to ongoing complaints about low pay and poor working conditions, exacerbated by the intense competition between the two companies. The regulators aim to address these issues to prevent potential social unrest and to ensure the sustainability of the gig economy, which has seen significant growth in China.
