Food insecurity rate rises to 14% in Washtenaw County, new study shows

More people in Washtenaw County lack reliable access to healthy food, according to a new Feeding America "Map the Meal Gap" study.

A recent study by the Washtenaw County Health Department revealed that the food insecurity rate in Washtenaw County has risen to 14%, up from 11% in the previous year. The increase is attributed to economic challenges, including rising costs of living and stagnant wages, which have disproportionately affected low-income families and individuals. The study also highlighted that certain demographic groups, such as single-parent households and communities of color, are experiencing higher rates of food insecurity. In response, local organizations and food banks are expanding their services and calling for increased community support and policy interventions to address the growing issue.
