  • APT29 targets diplomats with a new backdoor

European diplomats were targeted by a sophisticated Russian phishing campaign that promised an exclusive wine tasting event, according to a report by Proofpoint. The campaign, which began in November 2023, used emails that appeared to come from the European Union's ambassador to the U.S., inviting recipients to a wine tasting at a prestigious venue in Brussels. The emails contained a link to a malicious website designed to steal login credentials and other sensitive information. Proofpoint identified the campaign as the work of a Russian-aligned threat actor known as "TA499," which has a history of targeting diplomatic entities. The incident highlights the ongoing threat of cyber espionage and the use of social engineering tactics to compromise high-value targets.
