  • USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins confirmed she had approved waiver requests from Iowa and Indiana.

In an effort to promote healthier eating habits among recipients, lawmakers in Indiana and Iowa are proposing bills to restrict the use of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, commonly known as food stamps, to exclude the purchase of junk food. Indiana's House Bill 1169 and Iowa's Senate File 3 would limit SNAP purchases to items defined as "healthy" under the WIC program, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products, effectively banning the use of benefits for candy, soda, and other high-sugar, high-fat foods. Proponents argue that these restrictions would help combat obesity and improve public health, while critics, including anti-hunger advocates, contend that such measures could stigmatize SNAP recipients and limit their food choices, potentially leading to increased food insecurity.
