  • LONDON (Reuters) -A British man accused of defrauding investors out of nearly $100 million through a Ponzi-like scheme involving non-existent luxury wines lost his fight against extradition from Britain to the United States on Tuesday. Andrew Fuller, who was named by U.S. prosecutors as James Wellesley when he was indicted in 2022, is wanted on wire fraud and money laundering charges in York. Prosecutors allege that Fuller and his co-defendant Stephen Burton - who was extradited to the U.S. in 2023 and pleaded not guilty - ran Bordeaux Cellars, a company which said it brokered loans between investors and high net worth collectors.

A UK man, Gareth Hughes, lost his legal battle against the government's plan to build a high-speed rail line, HS2, which will result in the demolition of his home in Cheshire. Hughes argued that the project was unnecessary and would cause significant environmental damage, but the High Court dismissed his challenge, stating that the government's decision to proceed with the rail line was lawful. The court recognized the impact on Hughes and other affected residents but emphasized the project's potential benefits, including reduced travel times and economic growth. Hughes expressed disappointment in the ruling and concern for the future of his community, while the government reiterated its commitment to the HS2 project, highlighting its importance for the country's infrastructure and economy.
