  • Global food commodity prices increased in April, driven by higher cereal, meat and dairy product prices that outweighed falls in sugar and vegetable oils, the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization said on Friday. The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in a basket of internationally traded food commodities, averaged 128.3 points in April, up 1% versus the March estimate of 127.1 points. The April reading was also 7.6% higher than the same month a year ago but 19.9% below a March 2022 peak reached following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

World food prices increased in April due to higher demand for cooking oils and dairy products, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The FAO's food price index, which tracks monthly changes in international prices of a basket of food commodities, rose by 0.9% from March to April. The increase was driven by a 7.8% jump in the vegetable oil price index, attributed to strong global import demand for palm and soy oils, and a 1.8% rise in the dairy price index, due to increased demand from retail and food services sectors. However, the cereal price index saw a slight decline of 0.5%, primarily due to lower maize prices, while meat and sugar prices remained relatively stable.
