Governor Janet Mills of Maine has signed a bill extending the exemption for polystyrene foam packaging used for certain foods, such as meat, poultry, fish, seafood, and eggs, until 2026. This decision comes after the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) reported that no suitable alternatives exist for these specific food items. The original ban on polystyrene foam, aimed at reducing environmental litter and pollution, was set to take effect in 2021 but has been delayed multiple times due to the lack of viable alternatives.
