A small grocery store and registered farm in Newport News has been denied the ability to accept SNAP benefits, as the United States Department of Agriculture cited the presence of some prepared food.

The Newport News Market at City Center will not accept SNAP or EBT payments starting January 1, 2024, due to the high cost of processing these transactions, as announced by the market's management. This decision has sparked concerns among local residents and advocacy groups, who argue that it will limit access to fresh, healthy food options for low-income families. The market, known for its variety of local vendors and fresh produce, has been a vital resource for the community. In response to the backlash, the management is exploring alternative solutions, such as partnering with local organizations to provide food assistance programs, to help mitigate the impact on SNAP and EBT recipients.
