  • Our Community Food Pantry was recently notified by its largest food supplier, the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, that the U.S. Department of Agriculture had cancelled $440,000 worth of overall food deliveries for the four counties and 132,000 people it serves, including the pantry.

The Our Community Food Pantry in Westfield is facing challenges due to a significant reduction in federal food aid, which has decreased from 400,000 pounds to 100,000 pounds monthly. This cut, attributed to the end of emergency allotments from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and a reduction in The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) commodities, has forced the pantry to seek alternative sources of food to meet the needs of the community. The pantry, which serves over 1,000 families monthly, is now relying more heavily on local donations and fundraising efforts to bridge the gap. Volunteers and staff are concerned about the sustainability of their operations and are calling for increased community support to help maintain their services.
