  • Americans from all walks of life say they are struggling to eat healthy due to rising food prices, a new survey found.

According to a Yahoo News/YouGov poll conducted from April 11-14, 2023, a significant majority of Americans, about 73%, believe that food prices are higher than they were a year ago, with only 7% thinking they are lower. This perception is consistent across various demographic groups, including political affiliations, with 84% of Republicans, 66% of Democrats, and 70% of independents feeling that food prices have increased. The poll also highlighted that 64% of Americans are concerned about their ability to afford food in the next six months, with higher levels of concern among Black (74%) and Hispanic (73%) respondents compared to White respondents (60%). Additionally, the survey found that 59% of Americans have noticed food products shrinking in size while maintaining the same price, a phenomenon known as "shrinkflation."
