  • The young birds came from at least three hatcheries in Lancaster County and were supposed to be shipped to different parts of the country.

On April 10, 2024, a tractor-trailer carrying farm birds from Lancaster County hatcheries was discovered abandoned in a Delaware parking lot. The truck, which was found in New Castle County, contained approximately 8,000 birds, including chicks, ducks, and pheasants. The driver, identified as 43-year-old Jose Beato-Ardon from Lancaster, was arrested and charged with abandoning the animals. The birds were left without food or water, leading to the death of some. The Delaware Office of Animal Welfare and the Brandywine Valley SPCA intervened, rescuing the surviving birds and providing them with necessary care. The incident has raised concerns about the welfare of farm animals during transport.
