UC Davis has initiated a program to label and sell meat and eggs from animals raised under improved welfare conditions, marking a first in the U.S. for such a comprehensive animal welfare rating system. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Global Animal Partnership (GAP), introduces a five-step rating system that assesses the living conditions of farm animals, with higher steps indicating better welfare standards. The program aims to provide consumers with clearer information about the treatment of animals, potentially influencing purchasing decisions and encouraging higher welfare standards in animal agriculture. The products, which include beef, pork, chicken, and eggs, are now available at the university's dining halls and have been well-received, with plans to expand sales to other outlets.
