  • The breakthrough comes at a really important time.

Researchers at the University of California San Diego have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against cancer by developing a new method to target and destroy cancer cells using a combination of light and sound. The technique, known as "sonodynamic therapy," involves injecting patients with a light-sensitive drug that accumulates in cancer cells. When these cells are then exposed to specific wavelengths of light, the drug produces reactive oxygen species that damage the cancer cells. To enhance the treatment's effectiveness, the researchers also use ultrasound to create microbubbles that help the drug penetrate deeper into the tumor. Initial tests on mice have shown promising results, with the treatment successfully shrinking tumors and extending the animals' lifespans. The researchers are now working to refine the technique and hope to begin human clinical trials within the next few years.
