President Donald Trump's plan to cut taxes by trillions of dollars could also trim billions in spending from social safety net programs, including food aid for lower-income people.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has proposed changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that would impact approximately 1 million Americans, particularly those aged 50 to 55 without children. The proposed rule would extend work requirements to this age group, mandating that they work at least 80 hours a month to continue receiving benefits. Currently, these requirements apply to SNAP recipients aged 18 to 49. The changes aim to align SNAP with the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, which has similar work requirements. Critics argue that the proposal could lead to increased hunger and hardship, while supporters believe it will encourage employment and self-sufficiency. Public comments on the proposal are being accepted until July 24.
