Influencer Faces Charges After Alleged Elephant Enclosure Jump at Omaha Zoo

An influencer known as "Elisa B” is facing multiple charges after allegedly jumping into an elephant enclosure at the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska, on April 15th, 2024. The incident, captured on video by onlookers, quickly went viral across social media platforms, sparking widespread criticism and prompting a swift response from zoo officials and local law enforcement.

According to court documents obtained by the Omaha World-Herald, Elisa B., whose full name is reportedly Elisa Bellas, 25, of Omaha, has been charged with trespassing to commit an act of violence or terror, prohibited access, and photography/video recording in a restricted area. Trespassing to commit an act of violence or terror carries the most significant potential penalty, a Class II misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. The other charges are classified as civil infractions.

The incident unfolded around 2:30 PM on a Saturday afternoon, a peak visitation time for the zoo. Witnesses reported seeing Bellas climb over a railing surrounding the Asian elephant habitat and descend into the enclosure. Video footage circulating online shows her interacting briefly with one of the elephants before zoo staff intervened to remove her. The video, initially posted on TikTok, quickly gained traction, drawing millions of views and triggering a wave of reactions ranging from amusement to outrage.

Zoo Director Lee Graham addressed the incident in a statement released shortly after it occurred. "The safety of our animals and guests is always our top priority," Graham stated. “This individual’s actions were reckless and dangerous, demonstrating a complete disregard for both. We are grateful for the quick response of our security team who ensured everyone's safety.” The zoo confirmed that no elephants or people were injured during the incident.

The motivation behind Bellas’ actions remains unclear. Her social media presence reveals an influencer focused primarily on fashion, lifestyle, and travel content. She has over 150,000 followers on TikTok and a significant following on Instagram. While her posts generally portray a lighthearted and adventurous persona, there is no immediately apparent indication of any prior animal rights activism or similar behavior that might explain the jump.

The Douglas County Attorney’s Office filed charges against Bellas on April 16th. Her initial court appearance was held on April 17th, where she was released on her own recognizance pending further legal proceedings. Her attorney, Michael Mertes, stated in a brief statement to reporters that his client intends to plead not guilty and is cooperating with the investigation. He declined to comment further on the specifics of the case.

The Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium has a long-standing reputation for its commitment to animal welfare and conservation efforts. The Asian elephant habitat, specifically designed to mimic their natural environment, houses six elephants: Janani, Madhuri, Asha, Kailash, Suri, and Malaika. Zoo officials emphasize the importance of maintaining strict boundaries around animal habitats to ensure both animal and visitor safety. The incident has prompted renewed discussion regarding influencer behavior and the potential consequences of seeking online attention through dangerous or irresponsible actions. While many influencers strive to create engaging content responsibly, this case serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved when boundaries are crossed in pursuit of views and followers. The zoo is reviewing its security protocols following the event, although no immediate changes have been announced.

Bellas’ next court date is scheduled for May 8th, where she will be formally arraigned. The outcome of the case could potentially involve fines, jail time, or community service, depending on the judge's ruling and any mitigating factors presented during trial. The incident highlights the delicate balance between public access to wildlife attractions and the imperative need to protect both animals and visitors from harm.
