Classic French 75 Cocktail Recipe
Locales: Champagne-Ardenne (historical), FRANCE
French 75 Recipe (as popularized by Harry MacElhone)
- 2 ounces Gin (London Dry is traditionally recommended)
- 3/4 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
- 1/2 ounce Simple Syrup (equal parts sugar and water, heated until dissolved)
- 3 ounces Champagne (Brut or Extra Brut recommended)
- Lemon Twist, for garnish
Instructions:
- Combine gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup in a shaker filled with ice.
- Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds.
- Strain into a chilled Champagne flute.
- Top with Champagne.
- Garnish with a lemon twist.
Today, the French 75 is enjoyed globally, a testament to MacElhone's ingenuity and the American Bar's place as a pivotal gathering point during a turbulent period in history. Its surprising recent origins serve as a reminder that even the most beloved cocktails can have remarkably humble beginnings, born out of a specific moment, a particular patron's request, and a desire for something truly different.
