The Cleveland Ballet is poised to offer audiences a truly unique and immersive experience this fall with its new performance, “In Vino Veritas.” Combining the elegance of classical ballet with the vibrant energy of wine tasting, the show promises an evening that engages all senses. This innovative production isn't just about watching dancers; it’s about experiencing art alongside a curated selection of Ohio wines, creating a memorable and interactive event for attendees.

The concept originated from Artistic Director Bethany Alfieri, who envisioned a way to connect with the community on a deeper level while also showcasing the athleticism and artistry of her company. "We wanted to create something that felt special, accessible, and truly reflective of Cleveland’s vibrant cultural scene," Alfieri explained in an interview. The idea blossomed into “In Vino Veritas,” which translates from Latin as "in wine, truth." This phrase serves as a thematic anchor for the performance, exploring themes of honesty, vulnerability, and connection through movement and music.

The ballet itself is structured around five distinct movements, each paired with a different Ohio wine selected in collaboration with local experts from The Wine Cellar. These aren't just any wines; they’ve been chosen to complement the mood and narrative arc of each section. Attendees will receive tasting notes detailing the characteristics of each wine and how it relates to the corresponding dance sequence. This element elevates the experience beyond a standard ballet performance, transforming it into an educational and sensory exploration.

The first movement, “Awakening,” features a crisp, dry Riesling from Ferrante Winery & Vineyards. The choreography reflects this lightness with fluid, graceful movements that evoke a sense of new beginnings and potential. As the evening progresses, the wine selections become richer and more complex, mirroring the evolving narrative on stage. A robust Cabernet Sauvignon from Windsor Castle Vineyard accompanies a powerful and emotionally charged section exploring themes of struggle and resilience. A delicate Pinot Noir sets the scene for a romantic pas de deux, while a sparkling Lambrusco adds a playful touch to a celebratory finale.

The music accompanying “In Vino Veritas” is equally eclectic, blending classical scores with contemporary compositions. Alfieri has carefully curated a soundtrack that enhances the emotional impact of each movement and complements the nuances of the wine pairings. Expect familiar ballet melodies interwoven with unexpected sonic textures, creating an atmosphere both familiar and refreshingly new.

Beyond the innovative pairing of dance and wine, “In Vino Veritas” also highlights the talent within the Cleveland Ballet company. The cast features a mix of seasoned principal dancers and rising stars, each bringing their unique skills and artistry to the stage. Several soloists will have opportunities to shine, showcasing their individual strengths and contributing to the overall narrative depth.

The production’s design elements further contribute to its immersive quality. Stage lighting is carefully calibrated to enhance the colors and aromas of the wine, while costumes are designed to reflect the mood and style of each movement. The set design aims to create a visually striking backdrop that complements both the dance and the wine presentation.

"In Vino Veritas” represents more than just a performance; it’s an event designed to foster community engagement and celebrate Cleveland's thriving arts and culinary scene. Tickets are expected to be in high demand, reflecting the excitement surrounding this unique production. The Cleveland Ballet hopes that “In Vino Veritas” will not only entertain audiences but also inspire them to explore new artistic experiences and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of Northeast Ohio.

The performance is scheduled for a limited run at Playhouse Square's KeyBank State Theatre, offering multiple dates in October 2025. For those interested in attending, early ticket purchase is strongly recommended through the Cleveland Ballet’s website or Playhouse Square box office. This promises to be an evening of artistry, indulgence, and connection – a truly unforgettable experience for all who attend.
