New Leadership Takes Helm at Southern Minnesota Media Group

The Southern Minnesota News Network (SMNN), a vital regional news provider encompassing publications like the Faribault County Herald, Worthington Daily Globe, and others across southern Minnesota, has welcomed a new face to its leadership team: Sarah Schmidt as Regional Managing Editor. This appointment marks a significant shift for the A&P Media Group (APG) subsidiary, signaling a renewed focus on community engagement and digital growth within the region.
Schmidt’s arrival follows a period of transition at SMNN, previously led by Dave Martin who recently departed. Her role is multifaceted, encompassing not only editorial oversight but also strategic planning to bolster the network's presence across its various publications and online platforms. She will be responsible for guiding content creation, ensuring journalistic integrity, and fostering collaboration amongst the diverse team of reporters and editors spread throughout southern Minnesota.
Bringing a wealth of experience from her previous role as Managing Editor at the Traverse City Record-Eagle in Michigan, Schmidt possesses a proven track record of revitalizing local news organizations. The Traverse City Record-Eagle, like many regional newspapers, faced challenges related to declining print subscriptions and evolving consumer habits. Schmidt’s leadership there focused on expanding digital offerings, embracing community engagement initiatives, and diversifying revenue streams – strategies she intends to implement within the SMNN network as well.
"I'm incredibly excited to join the Southern Minnesota News Network," Schmidt stated in a press release announcing her appointment. "This is an opportunity to build upon the strong foundation already in place and work alongside talented journalists who are deeply committed to serving their communities. I believe local news plays a vital role in strengthening democracy, and I’m eager to help SMNN continue its mission of providing accurate, relevant, and engaging information."
One key area Schmidt plans to focus on is enhancing the digital experience for readers. This includes improving website functionality, expanding online content offerings (such as video and interactive graphics), and leveraging social media platforms to reach a wider audience. Recognizing that many residents primarily consume news through their phones or tablets, she aims to ensure SMNN’s online presence is user-friendly and accessible across all devices.
Beyond digital enhancements, Schmidt emphasizes the importance of maintaining – and strengthening – the network's commitment to local reporting. She understands that community newspapers are often the primary source of information for residents on important issues like school board meetings, county government decisions, and local events. Her goal is to ensure these vital services continue to be provided with accuracy and depth.
"Local news isn’t just about covering crime or sports; it's about telling the stories that shape our communities," Schmidt explained. "It's about holding those in power accountable and providing a platform for diverse voices." She intends to encourage reporters to delve deeper into local issues, explore solutions-oriented journalism, and actively solicit feedback from readers.
The appointment of Schmidt also coincides with APG’s broader strategy of investing in its regional media holdings. APG, a privately held company, has been steadily acquiring newspapers across the country, often focusing on smaller markets where local news coverage is dwindling. Their approach emphasizes supporting local journalism and fostering community connections rather than pursuing aggressive profit maximization.
The Southern Minnesota News Network serves a geographically diverse region with distinct communities, each possessing unique needs and interests. Schmidt’s experience in managing multiple publications and tailoring content to specific audiences will be crucial as she navigates this landscape. She acknowledges the challenges facing regional news organizations – declining advertising revenue, competition from national media outlets, and evolving consumer habits – but remains optimistic about the future of local journalism.
"The need for reliable, trustworthy local news has never been greater," Schmidt concluded. "I’m confident that by working together with our dedicated team and engaging with our communities, we can ensure the Southern Minnesota News Network continues to thrive as a vital source of information and connection for years to come."
