Cedar Rapids Library to Host Inclusive Cafe, Horizons Cafe Set to Open in 2027
Locale: UNITED STATES

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - April 8th, 2026 - The Cedar Rapids Public Library is poised to gain a vibrant new addition with the planned opening of Horizons Cafe in early 2027. The cafe, spearheaded by the local non-profit Horizons, isn't just about serving coffee and pastries; it's a powerful initiative designed to foster inclusion, provide valuable job skills, and enrich the community.
Horizons, a long-standing organization dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities, announced its plans today. The cafe will offer a diverse menu of food and beverage options for library patrons and the wider Cedar Rapids community. However, the true heart of the project lies in its unique training and employment model.
"This is more than just a cafe; it's an investment in people," explained Sarah Swartzendruber, Executive Director of Horizons. "Horizons Cafe will provide a real-world, hands-on learning environment for our participants, allowing them to develop practical skills in all facets of the food service industry - from food preparation and customer service to inventory management and point-of-sale operations."
The concept addresses a significant challenge faced by many individuals with disabilities: access to meaningful employment. Often, traditional job settings lack the supportive structures and individualized training needed for success. Horizons Cafe aims to bridge that gap, providing a nurturing environment where participants can gain confidence, build skills, and ultimately, secure sustainable employment, both within the cafe and beyond.
"We believe in the potential of every individual," Swartzendruber stated. "This cafe allows us to provide targeted training tailored to each participant's needs and abilities. We'll be focusing on building not only technical skills but also essential soft skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving - skills that are vital for success in any career."
The project has received crucial financial backing from the Leonard and Millie Thompson Foundation, known for its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote community development and inclusivity. Additionally, the Friends of the Cedar Rapids Public Library have enthusiastically pledged their support, recognizing the synergistic benefits of the cafe for library users and the community as a whole.
"The library is a hub for learning, connection, and community engagement," noted a spokesperson for the Friends group. "A cafe naturally complements this mission, providing a comfortable space for people to gather, study, and socialize. And to partner with Horizons on a project that also supports individuals with disabilities is truly exceptional."
Construction is slated to begin later this summer, with the library working closely with Horizons to minimize disruption to ongoing library services. The cafe space will be integrated seamlessly into the existing library layout, creating a welcoming and accessible environment for all. Architects are prioritizing universal design principles to ensure the space is fully accessible to individuals of all abilities.
Horizons currently serves over 200 individuals with disabilities annually, offering a range of programs designed to promote independence, self-advocacy, and full participation in community life. The cafe represents an expansion of these services, offering a new and innovative pathway to employment. The organization anticipates that the cafe will not only benefit its direct participants but will also serve as a model for inclusive employment practices for other businesses in Cedar Rapids and beyond.
Local residents have already expressed excitement about the project. Early reactions on social media platforms indicate strong support for the initiative, with many praising Horizons for its commitment to inclusivity and the library for its vision in embracing the partnership. The anticipated opening in early 2027 is already generating buzz, and the community eagerly awaits the chance to support the cafe and its mission. Horizons is planning a series of volunteer opportunities for the community to assist with the final stages of preparation, further strengthening the bond between the cafe and the city it serves.
