From Showboat to Social Club: Chesaning Welcomes "The Black Lotus" Eatery and Lounge

Chesaning, Michigan, has a new dining and entertainment destination with the opening of The Black Lotus, a restaurant and liquor lounge that has breathed new life into the building formerly occupied by the iconic Showboat Restaurant. The Black Lotus, which officially opened its doors on January 19th, 2024, aims to be a sophisticated yet comfortable gathering spot, offering a modern American menu with a focus on shareable plates and a curated cocktail program.

For decades, the building at 125 W. Saginaw St. housed the Showboat Restaurant, a beloved local establishment known for its family-friendly atmosphere and traditional American fare. The Showboat closed in November 2023 after 45 years in business, leaving a noticeable void in the Chesaning community. While many residents were saddened by its closure, the space quickly attracted the attention of new owners eager to revitalize the location.

Enter Adam and Chelsea Birchmeier, a husband-and-wife team with a vision for a more contemporary dining experience. They purchased the property and embarked on a significant renovation, transforming the familiar interior of the Showboat into the stylish and inviting ambiance of The Black Lotus. The renovations, described as a "complete overhaul," involved updating the décor, redesigning the layout, and installing a new bar area designed to foster a social atmosphere.

The Black Lotus's menu, developed by Chef James Sposato (who also serves as the restaurant's General Manager), diverges considerably from the Showboat’s traditional offerings. Rather than focusing on large entrees, the menu centers around shareable appetizers and small plates. Key items include items like smoked brisket nachos, a charcuterie board, pretzel bites with beer cheese dip, and a variety of flatbreads. They also offer a limited selection of larger plates, like pan-seared salmon and a steak frites option, catering to those seeking a more substantial meal.

The lounge boasts a diverse drink menu created by bar manager, Sarah Birchmeier (Chelsea’s sister), featuring both classic cocktails and original creations. Locals have expressed enthusiasm for the new establishment, praising the updated atmosphere, unique menu, and quality of the cocktails. The Birchmeiers have also actively engaged with the community through social media, posting updates on renovations, menu items, and special events.

The Black Lotus isn’t just aiming to be a popular restaurant; the owners envision it becoming a hub for social gatherings and events.
