North Adams Food Pantry Expands Hours to Meet Growing Demand
Locale: UNITED STATES

NORTH ADAMS, MA - April 1st, 2026 - The North Adams Food Pantry today announced the addition of Thursday hours, a direct response to the steadily increasing demand for food assistance within the community. Pantry Director Amy Lubin revealed the expansion, stating the goal is to alleviate growing wait times and ensure accessible support for residents facing food insecurity.
The pantry, a vital resource located at 49 Eagle St., will now operate from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. This represents a significant commitment to serving the needs of North Adams, Hinsdale, and parts of Williamstown - a service area experiencing a marked rise in those requiring assistance.
"We've been seeing increased demand lately, which means longer wait times for our clients," Lubin explained. "Adding Thursday hours will help alleviate some of that congestion and make it easier for people to access the food they need."
A Growing Trend of Food Insecurity
The expansion of the pantry's hours isn't happening in a vacuum. Across the nation, and increasingly within Massachusetts, food banks and pantries are reporting record numbers of individuals and families seeking help. Experts attribute this surge to a confluence of factors, including persistent inflation impacting grocery costs, the phasing out of pandemic-era assistance programs, and a widening gap between wages and the cost of living. A recent report by Feeding America estimates that over 34 million people, including 9 million children, may experience food insecurity in 2026. The North Adams area, while traditionally resilient, has not been immune to these national trends. Local economic shifts, including the closure of smaller businesses and a lack of affordable housing, have contributed to the growing need.
Community Support is Key The North Adams Food Pantry operates entirely on donations and the dedication of volunteers. Lubin emphasized the critical role community support plays in the pantry's ability to function. "We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our donors and the tireless efforts of our volunteers. Without them, we simply couldn't meet the growing demand." Volunteer opportunities range from sorting and packing food to assisting clients with distribution. The pantry is actively recruiting additional volunteers to support the expanded hours.
Most Needed Items & Donation Information
Currently, the pantry is particularly in need of several key items. While all donations are appreciated, the most urgently requested goods include:
- Canned Vegetables: A staple for nutritious meals.
- Canned Fruits: Providing essential vitamins and minerals.
- Pasta Sauce: Versatile and can be paired with pasta or used in other recipes.
- Peanut Butter: A good source of protein and relatively inexpensive.
- Toiletries: Often overlooked, but essential for maintaining dignity and hygiene. (Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.)
Donations can be dropped off at the pantry during operating hours. Monetary donations are also gratefully accepted and allow the pantry to purchase specific items needed to meet client needs. Lubin noted that the pantry can often leverage bulk purchasing power to maximize the impact of financial contributions.
Looking Ahead: Addressing Systemic Issues
While the expansion of hours is a welcome step, Lubin acknowledges that the pantry is a temporary solution to a larger systemic problem. "We're providing a critical service, but we also need to address the root causes of food insecurity," she said. The pantry is actively collaborating with local organizations and social service agencies to connect clients with resources that can help them achieve long-term financial stability, such as job training programs, housing assistance, and benefit enrollment assistance.
