Ely, Iowa, Partners with Community Center to Combat Rural Food Insecurity
Locale: UNITED STATES

ELY, Iowa - March 22nd, 2026 - The city of Ely, Iowa, is bolstering its commitment to community well-being through a new partnership with the Southeast Linn Community Center, aiming to address the often-overlooked issue of food insecurity in rural areas. Beginning this January, the collaboration will provide monthly deliveries of essential food items to Ely residents facing hardship. This initiative, fueled by a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Cedar Rapids, promises a significant impact on the lives of vulnerable families and individuals.
Food insecurity, defined as lacking consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life, is a pervasive problem across the United States. While often associated with urban poverty, the challenges are often amplified in rural communities like Ely. Limited access to grocery stores, transportation barriers, and economic hardship contribute to a higher risk of hunger. Many rural residents may face long drives to reach supermarkets, and those without reliable transportation - particularly seniors and individuals with disabilities - can find it exceptionally difficult to secure nutritious food.
"We're really excited about this partnership," explained Ely City Administrator, Nick Gering. "Food insecurity is a problem, especially in rural areas, and we're hoping that these monthly food deliveries will make a difference." Gering highlighted the city's proactive approach to identifying and addressing the needs of its residents, noting that the partnership wasn't merely a reactive measure, but a long-term investment in community health. The city conducted a small-scale needs assessment last year, revealing a surprising number of households struggling to consistently put food on the table, despite many holding down multiple jobs. This local data proved pivotal in securing the grant and demonstrating the genuine need within the Ely community.
The deliveries themselves will focus on providing not just calories, but comprehensive nutrition. Each monthly box will include a curated selection of fresh produce, dairy products, and other essential, nutritious foods - a crucial aspect of the program. Simply providing shelf-stable items, while helpful, doesn't address the broader health concerns related to a lack of access to fresh, wholesome ingredients. The emphasis on produce and dairy aims to improve dietary habits and overall well-being among recipients.
Carol Bitting, Director of the Southeast Linn Community Center, expressed gratitude for the collaborative spirit driving this initiative. "We're really grateful for the support of Ely and the Community Foundation," she said. "This program will make a huge difference in the lives of many families in our community." The Southeast Linn Community Center has a long history of serving the region, providing vital resources and support to those in need. Bitting emphasized that this partnership represents a natural extension of their existing mission and will significantly enhance their ability to reach vulnerable populations.
The Community Foundation of Greater Cedar Rapids played a critical role in making this program a reality. Their grant funding allowed Ely and the Community Center to pool resources and create a sustainable delivery system. The Foundation's commitment to addressing systemic issues and fostering community resilience aligns perfectly with the goals of the Ely partnership. They also provide technical assistance and ongoing evaluation support, ensuring the program's long-term effectiveness.
Currently, the Center is finalizing the logistics of the delivery schedule and the signup process. Residents interested in participating are encouraged to stay tuned for further announcements, expected within the coming weeks. The Center plans to utilize a combination of online registration and phone-in options to ensure accessibility for all. They are also exploring partnerships with local volunteers to assist with packing and delivering the food boxes, further strengthening community engagement.
Looking ahead, both Ely and the Southeast Linn Community Center envision this program as a stepping stone towards broader food security initiatives in the region. They are exploring the possibility of establishing a community garden to supplement the food deliveries and provide opportunities for residents to learn about sustainable food practices. The long-term goal is to create a more resilient and equitable food system that ensures everyone in the community has access to the nourishment they need to thrive.
