  • Moderate alcohol consumption and a higher intake of fruits, oily fish, and cereals are linked to a lower risk of rheumatoid arthritis, while tea and coffee may be linked to an increased risk, according to new research from the University of Leeds.

The article from the University of Leeds discusses a study linking dietary habits to the risk of developing chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. The research, published in the journal *RMD Open*, found that regular consumption of oily fish, fresh fruit, and whole grains such as cereal can significantly reduce the risk of these conditions. Specifically, eating oily fish once or more per week was associated with a 28% lower risk of rheumatoid arthritis, while daily intake of fresh fruit reduced the risk by 36%, and daily cereal consumption by 22%. The study suggests that these foods might help due to their anti-inflammatory properties, potentially through the presence of omega-3 fatty acids in fish, antioxidants in fruits, and fiber in cereals. The findings underscore the importance of diet in managing or preventing inflammatory diseases.
