ETSU Dashboard Evolves into Comprehensive Tennessee Public Health Tool
Locale: UNITED STATES

Johnson City, TN - March 30th, 2026 - What began as a spring 2020 project at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) to visualize Tennessee's COVID-19 response has blossomed into a sophisticated and continually evolving public health tool, providing granular, real-time insights that are informing decision-making across the state. The ETSU COVID-19 Dashboard, accessible at https://covid19.etsu.edu/, has moved beyond simple case tracking to become a critical resource for public health officials, researchers, and concerned citizens alike.
Initially conceived by Dr. James "Chip" Chapman, a clinical professor in ETSU's College of Public Health, and a dedicated team of students and faculty, the dashboard initially aggregated data from the Tennessee Department of Health, Johns Hopkins University, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). While many states adopted similar data portals during the height of the pandemic, ETSU's offering distinguished itself through its user-friendly interface, frequent updates, and a commitment to data transparency. However, the pandemic's evolution, coupled with advances in data analytics, has necessitated significant enhancements.
In 2026, the dashboard now incorporates a much wider range of data sources, including wastewater surveillance data - a key early warning system for viral outbreaks - genomic sequencing information tracking variant prevalence, and even anonymized mobility data gleaned from mobile phone usage, allowing researchers to understand how movement patterns correlate with infection rates. This integration allows for predictive modeling, offering a glimpse into potential hotspots and enabling proactive resource allocation.
"We realized early on that simply showing what was happening wasn't enough," explains Dr. Chapman. "We needed to understand why it was happening and, crucially, what might happen next. The dashboard's evolution reflects that ambition. We've added layers of complexity, but always with the goal of presenting the information in a clear, accessible way."
The dashboard's interactive features are particularly powerful. Users can now filter data by age, race, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status, revealing stark disparities in COVID-19's impact. Geographic heatmaps pinpoint areas with high infection rates, allowing targeted interventions. A new "vaccination effectiveness" module, utilizing data from the Tennessee Immunization Registry, visually demonstrates the protective benefits of vaccination against severe illness, hospitalization, and death. This feature has become particularly valuable in countering vaccine hesitancy and promoting informed decision-making.
Beyond the core epidemiological data, the dashboard now features a dedicated section analyzing the pandemic's economic consequences. This includes metrics such as unemployment claims, small business loan applications, and tourism revenue, providing a holistic view of the pandemic's far-reaching effects. ETSU researchers are currently collaborating with the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development to use this data to inform economic recovery strategies.
The dashboard isn't static. A key feature is its API (Application Programming Interface), which allows other researchers and developers to access the underlying data for their own analysis. This promotes collaboration and accelerates the pace of scientific discovery. Several universities and public health organizations across the Southeast are now utilizing the ETSU dashboard API in their own projects.
Looking ahead, Dr. Chapman's team is exploring the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to further enhance the dashboard's predictive capabilities. "We're working on a model that can forecast potential outbreaks with greater accuracy, taking into account factors like weather patterns, population density, and vaccination rates," he says. "The goal is to give public health officials a crucial head start in responding to future challenges, not just with COVID-19, but with any emerging infectious disease."
The ETSU COVID-19 Dashboard stands as a testament to the power of data-driven decision-making and the vital role universities play in addressing public health crises. It's no longer just a pandemic tracker; it's a dynamic, evolving resource that is shaping Tennessee's response to present and future health challenges.
