The CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST) in Thiruvananthapuram has developed an innovative technology that transforms biomedical waste into valuable soil additives. This technology not only addresses the growing problem of biomedical waste disposal but also promotes sustainable agricultural practices by converting waste into biochar, a form of charcoal used to enrich soil. The process involves pyrolysis, where waste is heated in the absence of oxygen, producing biochar that can enhance soil fertility, increase water retention, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative not only mitigates environmental pollution but also offers an eco-friendly solution for waste management in healthcare facilities, potentially reducing the reliance on chemical fertilizers and aiding in carbon sequestration.
